Calculators

Calculators must be scientific and cannot be graphing or programmable. Phones cannot be used as calculators. You can get a suitable calculator for under $15.

Scientific calculators are ones that have functions beyond addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. At a minimum, your calculator must have the following buttons (NOTE: these buttons may look slightly different on different calculators):
-
y^x (exponential function)
-
x√ (root function)
-
log (base 10 logarithmic function)
-
ln (base e logarithmic function/natural log function)
-
e^x (e function)

If you intend to continue in chemistry beyond CHEM-101 and CHEM-102, the sin (sine), cos (cosine), and tan (tangent) functions as well as statistical functionality are recommended.

It is strongly recommended that you use the same calculator for all parts of chemistry, including labs, exams, quizzes, and homework. Many students score poorly on exams because they do not know how to work their calculator.
